Prevent duty and radicalisation

Spotting the signs of radicalisation and your statutory Prevent responsibilities.

The Prevent duty is a statutory requirement on schools to have due regard to the need to prevent people being drawn into terrorism. It applies to all forms of extremism — Islamist, far-right, far-left, single-issue, and any ideology promoting violence to achieve political ends.

Indicators of radicalisation include sudden changes in friendship groups, possession of extremist literature, expression of intolerant views about identifiable groups, scripted or rehearsed political language disproportionate to the pupil's age, and isolation from family or school activities.

Practice scenario

A Year 11 pupil who was previously engaged starts repeating slogans verbatim from a fringe online forum, withdraws from his usual friends, and begins arguing aggressively with classmates from a particular ethnic background. His teacher logs the change with the DSL, who initiates a Channel referral.

Try this in your classroom

  • Know that Prevent applies to all forms of extremism, not just one.
  • Watch for change — especially in friendship groups and language.
  • Refer concerns to the DSL, not directly to police.
  • Remember Channel is supportive, not punitive — it can be life-changing.
