Early Career Framework and ongoing CPD

Making the most of your induction and beyond.

The Early Career Framework (ECF) is the statutory two-year induction programme for new teachers in England. It defines what every teacher should know and be able to do by the end of their second year, drawing on the strongest evidence from cognitive science, behaviour and assessment.

Engage with the ECF actively rather than as a hoop. The structure exists to make you a much better teacher — not to generate paperwork. Read the supporting materials, watch the model lessons, try the strategies in your own classroom, and reflect honestly with your mentor.

Practice scenario

An ECT chooses 'questioning' as her year 1 focus. She reads two books, observes three colleagues in different subjects, films herself questioning, and discusses each in mentor meetings. By the end of the year, her questioning has visibly transformed.

Try this in your classroom

  • Treat the ECF as evidence-based development, not bureaucracy.
  • Use mentor meetings actively with specific examples.
  • Observe colleagues — including outside your subject.
  • Plan deliberate, focused CPD beyond ECT induction.
